In January 2020, Children’s Hospital’s new Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) was officially opened, expanding specialized pediatric cardiology services for the region. The new CICU at Children’s Hospital houses 28 large, private rooms designed to care for patients with any cardiac medical or surgical condition requiring specialized care from newborns to adulthood.
The same 24/7 in-hospital coverage by dedicated pediatric cardiac intensivists and the same collaborative approach to patient care continues from our previous space to our new CICU, but the new unit provides added comfort, sleeping space, and private bathrooms for each family combined with state-of-the-art equipment and technology that embrace and evolve the unit’s family-centered approach to care.
The Children’s Hospital Heart Center team does not only provide expert pediatric cardiology care, but our team also specializes in congenital heart care for adults. The new CICU provides spacious rooms that cater to those larger adult patients, is equipped for procedures to be done at the bedside, and is designed to easily accommodate Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) treatment and assist devices. In addition, the unit provides space to help patients and families transition from critical care to readiness for discharge.
